** HINT: It’s not a learning problem. It’s a clarity problem.

Are you working from the finished picture?

No matter if you’ve been in business for a number of years or just starting out. What I’m going to share with you today is going to shift the way you approach your business from here on in.

You might be thinking that I am crazy. I mean, what could I possibly tell you? You have the talent and skills and you know what you’re about right?

However, just because you know HOW to do something doesn’t mean you know HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS that does that something! Even if you have the best product or service in all of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, unless you create a business to support that product or service, your business is going to be in trouble eventually.

Most people start businesses, jumping right in without thought to design or structure. You would never think of building a house without first putting in the time and effort required to get exactly what you first see in your mind’s eye. You would never just have an idea and start building without a blueprint. Starting a business without a blueprint is like throwing darts in the dark.

You can’t build your business correctly in your head, on the fly. You need a blueprint and if you don’t have one it’s not too late. A blueprint is really mapping out your business simply using the following categories:

  1. Marketing: – customer attraction, conversion, retention, product/service management, research
  2. Operations: – HR, systems and IT, customer service, finance
  3. Fulfillment: product/service development, product/service delivery, product/service improvement.

What are some of the advantages of having a blueprint?

  • It will help you hire the right people at the right time because you will have absolute clarity on the roles and responsibilities that your business needs. It will also help you develop more accurate job descriptions.
  • Your marketing will be tightly focused because you see clearly what needs to be done. That way you’re not chasing the next new strategy or tactic blindly.
  • It allows you to easily and effectively add systems to your business. Once activities are mapped out you can create a system documenting how things need to be done.
  • You will see clearly what you need to know so you never waste time on ‘just in case’ learning.

Working from a finished picture involves having a blueprint to follow to help you get there.

I wrote this not for your intellectual entertainment but instead to motivate you to get started on a blueprint today. This is the opportunity you need to not just trade your hard earned money on hope, but to put the effort into creating the business that serves you and the life you want to live.
