Came across a study – MIT recently completed the first brain scans of humans engaging with artificial intelligence. It’s fascinating—and scary, depending on how you look at it. Here’s an excerpt from the article – ChatGPT may be eroding critical thinking skills:
“Does ChatGPT harm critical thinking abilities? A new study from researchers at MIT’s Media Lab has returned some concerning results.
The study divided 54 subjects—18 to 39 year-olds from the Boston area—into three groups, and asked them to write several SAT essays using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s search engine, and nothing at all, respectively. Researchers used an EEG to record the writers’ brain activity across 32 regions, and found that of the three groups, ChatGPT users had the lowest brain engagement and “consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels.” Over the course of several months, ChatGPT users got lazier with each subsequent essay, often resorting to copy-and-paste by the end of the study.”
As AI becomes more integrated into how we work, create, and connect, my question is –
What is your contribution?
I’m not asking about productivity or your ability to respond faster or scale wider. But YOUR contribution.
I ask this specific question because I’ve been thinking a lot about how easy it is to want the results—recognition, clients, income—without first making the decision to give. To contribute in a way that only you can.
When I first started my business, I was obsessed with making it work. But too often, “make it work” meant make it make money. And when you come at anything with that energy—getting before giving—it starts to feel hollow. Performative. Misaligned.
The pursuit of money, without a purpose or a commitment to meaningful value-for-value exchange, will always feel empty. No matter the amount, it will never be enough.
Even with AI. Especially with AI.
Because AI is not the differentiator. You are.
- Your clarity.
- Your lived experience.
- Your way of making sense of the world.
- Your commitment to serving from your zone of genius.
AI can assist. Accelerate. Amplify. But without clarity on what you bring to the table, even the most advanced tech becomes just another way to stay busy without meaning and get lazy.
What Does Contribution Look Like When Using ChatGPT?
1. Clarity of Purpose
Contribution starts with clarity. Instead of vague requests—“Write something inspiring”—you come with clear intent:
- “Help me articulate why my client might resist change.”
- “Break down my methodology so I can communicate it better.”
When you approach ChatGPT with intention, you contribute your clarity, and ChatGPT helps amplify it.
2. Active Engagement vs. Passive Consumption
Contribution demands active engagement. When you simply copy-paste generated text without your input, you’re letting AI think for you.
Instead, you:
- Challenge the ideas ChatGPT offers.
- Refine, push back, ask deeper questions.
- Treat ChatGPT like a thinking partner, not a vending machine.
Your active participation contributes depth, meaning, and nuance—qualities AI can’t supply on its own.
3. Investing Your Unique Perspective
Your lived experience, expertise, and context is your unique currency.
ChatGPT knows nothing of your personal wisdom or insight—until you intentionally share it.
- You offer personal anecdotes, client stories, and your authentic voice.
- You deliberately shape AI-generated ideas through your unique lens.
Your perspective contributes originality and authenticity to otherwise generic outputs.
4. Elevating the Exchange
Instead of extracting immediate, superficial solutions, you elevate the conversation:
- Ask thoughtful questions that push beyond obvious answers.
- Challenge ChatGPT to synthesize multiple angles or consider deeper ethical dimensions.
Your willingness to elevate the dialogue contributes genuine value—and the AI mirrors your thoughtful approach.
5. Commitment to Meaningful Outcomes
Contribution through ChatGPT is anchored by a clear commitment to meaningful outcomes—not just convenience or quick wins.
- You’re not looking for shortcuts; you’re seeking ways to deepen impact.
- You integrate AI thoughtfully into processes that support long-term clarity, alignment, and growth.
Your commitment contributes integrity and alignment—qualities AI alone can’t guarantee.
When you contribute deliberately in these ways, AI becomes not a crutch, but a catalyst—helping you amplify your authentic voice, vision, and value.
So I’ll ask again—because I’m asking myself too:
What is your contribution?
And if you’re not sure yet, maybe now is the time to answer the question.
Strategic Reflection Prompt:
Where are you trying to get before you’ve truly given? What value can you offer today that only you can bring?
