
Determining “right action” in business is less about a single correct move and more about aligning your daily activities with a clear strategic foundation. It involves moving from “chaotic activity” (busy work) to “meaningful progress” (targeted action).
This usually involves examining whether actions dovetail with the core purpose of the business, employing the use of various frameworks to rank actions against the return on your investment in said actions, creating a plan – usually where SMART goals are slotted in, and finally evaluating progress to recalibrate or reconfigure depending on shifts in the market.
In many instances, despite best efforts, what I have found is that most businesses never achieve the intended results, or if they do, it comes at a great cost especially at the human level.
So what’s missing?
What’s actually missing rarely sits in the plan itself. It sits in the relationship between the plan and the people expected to carry it. It sits in whether roles are truly understood or simply assigned, whether strengths are being used or overridden, whether the system is supporting clarity or requiring individuals to constantly translate what was never fully defined.
Alignment here is not a surface exercise; it is the difference between coordinated movement and continuous friction that gets normalized over time.
At the same time, there is an internal layer that doesn’t get spoken about in operational conversations, but it is always present.
The ability to stay with a vision without being pulled off course by every fluctuation in results, the discipline to act from intention rather than from reaction, the work of holding focus even when there is no immediate evidence that things are working.
It is easy to drift into managing fear, revisiting past outcomes, or trying to predict every possible future scenario as a way to feel in control, but that energy rarely translates into useful action.
What tends to matter more is the steadiness of engagement with what is in front of you, the capacity to continue acting in alignment with what you’ve committed to build, without constantly negotiating with doubt.
The emphasis musts be on doing all that you can, exactly where you are. It is not about overexertion or hustle for its own sake. It is about the integrity of contribution within your current position, the understanding that progress at a broader level depends on individuals fully occupying the roles they are in rather than performing partially and expecting the system to compensate.
When people consistently do less than what their role requires, the system doesn’t just slow down, it begins to distort, placing pressure on other parts to carry what is missing.
Advancement, whether in a business or in society, is tied to this standard of completeness in action, where each role is lived into fully rather than approximated.
Bring that back into a business context, and it shifts how “right action” is understood.
It becomes less about finding the perfect next move and more about ensuring that what is already in motion is being carried properly, by people who are clear, positioned correctly, and supported by systems that don’t require constant reinterpretation.
It also calls for a level of personal discipline that doesn’t rely on external validation to continue, but instead holds steady in execution because the direction has already been chosen with care.
