…so said Martha Graham to Agnes De Mille, choreographer of Oklahoma.
I don’t think we grasp the magnitude of that statement “there is only one of you in all time…” yet it’s true. We take for granted our uniqueness. We don’t see it. We think we have nothing new to offer.
It’s all been done before by someone else. The book we want to write has been written, the songs sung, the dances danced and that great idea I had last week to create an English/Indian Food Fusion restaurant? Someone opened up a restaurant with the same theme today!
Yet Martha’s advice to Agnes was priceless…
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.
Focus and re-read that line that I’ve highlighted in red.
Whatever it is that you are here to do will not come through anyone else.
If it isn’t brought forth by you – it will be lost forever! And such a shame that…
Contemplate the words of Hugh MacLeod:
Becoming an expert is a two step process:
1. Ignore what doesn’t matter.
2. Put in the hours.
Mastery adds a third step:
3. Be you, and only you.
The 3rd step is the most important step and some of us are now beginning to grasp WHO WE ARE in our entirety. Not just gender, or job title, hobbies or dreams. But what makes us tick.
Right now, pause, and celebrate WHO YOU ARE!
Because as Martha said, there is ONLY ONE OF YOU in all of time. 🙂
What would your life look like if you could power your own success, never feel confused about what you need to do and never hesitate to do it?
- Do you have clarity around WHO YOU REALLY ARE?
- Are you being noticed for your contribution in your current role?
- Do you know WHAT you need to do to get the results you want?
